2009 Silver African Ounce

Hello,

Quick introduction: I'm a new member here who just finally got signed up today but have been cruising the forums over the past few months. I'm currently living over in the UK but am an American citizen and am actually moving back in a few months time finally.

Has anyone ever seen the 2009 African Silver Ounce coins? I found a coin dealer in the UK selling a handful of these on eBay.co.uk several months back. I picked up 5 of these coins, just out of curiosity really. I haven't seen them anywhere else before. In fact, even the seller himself no longer has the coins listed on his website. I'm not sure if he sold out or what happened, but I was just curious if anyone had ever seen one before. They've got an interesting look to them. Picture:

Thanks! I believe it actually has a monetary value as well (very minimal), as opposed to just being a round. I dug up the description of the coins from a Google cached version of the old page which is below.

"These are completely new. The 2009 'African Ounce' is struck by Rwanda with a face value of 50 Rwandan Francs, silver fineness of .999 and a weight of 31.2 grammes (making the silver content exactly one troy ounce).

I like the rugged 3d map of Africa on the reverse, which stands out being the only part of the coin which isn't frosted. Under it a family of African elephants is depicted. To the left 'AFRICAN OUNCE' and to the right '1oz FINE SILVER 999 / 2009'. The edge is milled and the other side features an entirely bland symbol of Rwanda, something which translates to 'RWANDAN NATIONAL BANK' and a '50' at the bottom.

Each of these coins comes sealed in a plastic pouch which features the Rwandan National Bank logo at the top The coins are sent well packed and will arrive in perfect condition."

i always thought it would be neat if one of the african countries put something on their coins that more accurately reflected continent.

you know, instead of elephants and zebras you could have a relif of people with ak's, burning tires, machettes, you get the idea. :bear_w00t:

I wonder if they are telling the truth about the full troy ounce?

The 1-oz silver coin is very nice. I have never seen an "African Ounce" silver coin like that.

I was looking through my 2000-current edition of the world coin book last week and was noticing what pretty coinage some african countries put out. Yours stood out to me as well as several south african coins.

Thanks for all of the comments! I thought they were pretty neat too. I was paying a pretty penny for them, probably somewhere near double spot (ie why I only bought 5 of them), if you ran the currency conversion. He was charging 17.50 each. While it does seem pretty expenisve, this year the mint is getting 22.50 per Britannia, so it was actually a little cheaper than the other coins I'd been buying lately. I could have sworn I bought 10 2009 Britannias at 19.50 just a week back but now the website is showing 22.50. Anyways.

I don't see any more pictures of the 2009 African Ounce online, the reverse isn't nearly as cool as the side seen here, but when I get home tonight I'll get out the camera and try to snap a picture of the reverse for everyone.

Ohhhh, nice! You take that?

I like these threads about the off-the-beaten-path coins. These are exactly the ones I want to add to my collection.

I actually live on the Isle of Man, a small island off the coast of England in the Irish Sea, home to the Manx cat. They actually print a lot of smaller off beat coins here themselves but I really haven't picked any of them up. Anyone own any Isle of Man coinage?

Re: 2009 Silver African Ounce

Indie, I totally hate you. I've been trying to pick up Manx cats for over a year now and the closest I've come has been twice spot. No way I can justify that expense for a pretty face.

I've got a fair bit of regular Isle on Man coinage, tho. Mum is Irish and used to work there summers as a teen.

Re: 2009 Silver African Ounce

LOL. Yes, it's odd that I've lived on this peculiar island for over two years and haven't picked up any of their coinage (besides day to day currency obviously). It's a pretty small island, 30 miles by 15 miles. I think the prices over here are pretty high markup too. If anyone ever wants me to look out for anything in the next 4 months before I move home, let me know.

I've got one 1988 Silver Manx proof that I picked up on eBay. I only paid about $15, but it has a few scratches. Those were produced by the Pobjoy Mint. I don't see the Silver cats there now, though. I think they ended that series in 2005.

Is an African Ounce the same as a Troy Ounce?

I used to own a few Isle of man fractional 1/25th oz and 1/10th oz gold coins and a 1/25th oz Gilbraltar Dog coin but I sold all of them to buy some 1970's 1-oz silver art bars.

Sounds almost Monty-Pythonesque "African or European?... I don't know. Aaaaaaaah!":4_1_72:

It took me a few months to return to this thread but I finally remembered! I have much better quality photos of the front and back of this coin, if anyone is still interested in seeing them. It is a full troy ounce and is 40mm in diameter. It's apparently produced by a German mint. I've found lots of German silver/gold websites selling these coins sealed for around 16 euro each, so about $22. If anyone is interested I'll drop you some links. Pictures:

Here's one source, not sure if they ship worldwide and the site is in German:

http://www.muenzauktion.com/beko/ite...lang=en&id=430

Additionally you can find a good number of them on eBay.de if you try searching terms like "2009 ruanda silber" or "2009 afrika silber". I'm sure some of the eBay guys will ship wherever.
